Alfred Hawkins attended Western Michigan University. In 1962, he received BS in History and Political Science. In 1970, he received a MA in teaching the Disadvantage, in 1973, a MA in Educational Leadership, and in 1975, a Ed. S (Educational Specialist) Degree.
Alfred returned to Covert School as a classroom teacher in 1962. Teaching in both the elementary and high school, he was then appointed as Elementary School Principal. Shortly after, Alfred was appointed Acting Superintendent and served in a dual capacity for 9 years. He was appointed Superintendent of Schools in July 1978 and continued to serve both as Elementary Principal and Superintendent of Schools until 1986. Alfred is the second former student and the first African American to become Superintendent.
His leadership has brought significant improvements to the school's physical plant. For example, a new Child Care Center, Elementary School renovation, technology upgrades-including computers in all classrooms, cabling, infrastructure wired for the future, and Internet Access. Visitors have often noted maintenance and high standard cleanliness of the school buildings. Implementing the JROTC program has added discipline and pride for middle & high school students, and the initiation of the Alumni Hall of Fame in 1997 reflects the excellence of Covert graduates. Also, the After School Enrichment Program that provides an additional learning time for students interested in Math, Writing, Drama, Dance, and Photography have all been implemented under his leadership.
Alfred has a vision for the future, not only for the students and the school but, for the entire community. He quietly goes about getting things done. Alfred has consistently demonstrated his conscientiousness and genuine commitment to the education for young people as well as for professional growth and development.
Alfred Hawkins is married to Esperanza Normand-Hawkins and they have three children Mogda, Stephanie, and Michael. He is earnest, resourceful, dynamic, and honest. He is a true leader. By every standard, Alfred Hawkins is one of the most outstanding school administrators in the State of Michigan.
