James Sarno

Class of 1966

James Sarno was on the 1965 and 1966 Championships basketball teams for the Bulldogs. He was a Dell Parade All American as a senior at Covert High School. He was one of 12 playes from the USA picked to play in the Dapper Dan All American Team in Pittsburg, PA in the spring of 1966. Recruited by over 200 collegiate institutions, he chose to attend Northwestern University, where he was a four year starter.

After graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, he was appointed Head Freshman Coach at Northwestern and was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks BCA Team. He was a lead recruiter in Michigan, Ohio, and parts of Indiana for Northwestern.

In 1972 he decided to play in the European Professional League where he mostly played forward in France for 14 seasons. On multiple occasions he led the league in scoring and in one season averaged 32 points per game. His single game high of 53 points remains the record for the team he played for in Lyon, France.

He was awarded a Masters DEgree from Boston University in 2003. In 1987 and 1988 he wroked for the Van Buren County Sheriffs Department. From 1988-1992 he worked for Consumers Energy as a Public Affairs Specialist. FRom 1993-1999 he worked for Covert Township Fire and Ambulance Services as Assistant Chief and EMT-S. Jim speaks both English and French. He is a certified fire fighter and real estate broker.

He served on the South Haven Board of Trustees, was a volunteer fire fighter, member of Van Buren County Domestic Violence Coalition, Victim Advocate Program Volunteer, and was a member of the Lions Club.

He is the only All American Basketball player from Covert High School.

He is the only alumnus drafted by the NBA.

He is the only alumnus to have played professionally in the US and Europe.

He is the only alumnus to have coached in a divion one basketball program.
