Angelene (Angie) Smith graduated from Covert High School in the Class of 1947. She earned a degree in Food and Nutrition from Tuskegee University in 1952 (formerly Tuskegee Institute) and spent 20 years as the wife of a career Air Force Officer. They are the proud parents of daughters Birgit and April.

Angie is the daughter of the late Earl A. & Rev. Alvene E. Grice. Angie characterizes her mother as being her primary role model. Her mother was a visionary who dedicated her life to humanity, but her special concern was for the salvation, education, motivation and nurturing of the youth of her church and community. Angie inherited some of the leadership and caring qualities exemplified by her mother. She enjoys working with children, teaching Sunday school, sponsoring theme parties and producing Christmas pageants. While her husband was stationed at numerous bases, she was the club treasurer and wrote a colunm for the Officer's Wives Club, was Thrift Shop Chairman, Red Cross Gray Lady Volunteer and liaison for wives who were awaiting the return of their husbands from Vietnam.

While living in Buffalo, New York after her husband retired from the military in 1970, she organized a Saturday Church School and Youth Choir, and played piano for the youth and senior choirs. She also sponsored an Annual African Buffet as a fund raiser for the church, and was president of the Buffalo Chapter of the Tuskegee Alumni Association.

Upon returning to Covert in 1991, Angie reunited with the church from her childhood, Covert Community Church, and became their organist. She also started a "Hands on" after-school project, a Saturday School Club, and initiated the Covert Alumni Hall of Fame Project at Covert Public Schools. She is the founder and first president of the Rev. Alvene Lowe-Grice Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over $70,000.00 to Covert graduates.

Angie's activities reflect her love of children, devotion to music, helping others and most of all, sharing a special friendship with her husband of 54 years.
