CAROLYE BANKS HAWKINS

Carolye Banks Hawkins is one of five girls born to Carrie Gray Banks and Quincy Banks. Her magnetic personality made her a much sought after individual. She was president of her senior class. After graduation from Covert High in 1948 she continued to pursue her educational goals attending Lake Michigan College from 1964-to 1966. In 1967 she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University. In 1971 she received a Masters of Arts in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Reading Education. She taught in Covert Schools for 25 years retiring in 1992 as the Reading Consultant.

She is a member of the Michigan Reading Association, American Association for University Women and the Teachers English Council. On the local level she has served in many organizations over the years and still remains active in the Van Buren United Civic Organization, the South Haven Hospital Auxiliary Board, the Covert Historical Museum and the Michigan Assoication of Retired Personnel.

Carolye is a life long member of Covert Community Church where she serves as pianist, treasurer, program coordinator, Sunday School teacher and member of the Trustee Board.

She has been married to Sylvester Hawkins for 50 years. They are the parents of four children, Cynthia, Gail, Paula and Steven. She has seven grandchildren and was instrumental in raising three children in the community.

One of her friends characterized Carolye Hawkins as being professional, likeable, thoughtful, helpful, honest, fun, interested in young people, a leader in her church and community, a mother, a wife and a teacher. She is an extraordinary role model to the youth of Covert Schools and the community.
