James (Jim) McKee was the youngest of eight children born to Charles and Lolia McKee. He graduated from Covert High School in 1959 and from Michigan State University in 1963.

Jim began his teaching career in Flint, Michigan as a junior high school social studies teacher and track coach. He completed a Master's Degree in Counseling from Michigan State University and his doctorial studies at Indiana University. In 1971 he accepted a faculty position at Cortland State College in New York. At Cortland he developed the first Black Studies Program. He served as chairperson of that department for over 10 years. Jim's 21 year tenure at Cortland State University included numerous accomplishments, ie., State Certification of the first major and minor Black Studies program; Jim represented the State University System of New York on a visit to Ghana and Sierra Leone, Africa; he was involved in the recruitment of minority students and faculty; 10 years on the Executive Board of the National Council of Black Studies;served as faculty advisor for the Cortland State Gospel Choir.

Jim, a devoted husband to Dr.Barbara McKee and father of four children, Scott, Deborah, Derek and Kristin. Sadly, James McKee's life was unexpectedly shortened in January 1993. The positive influence his life has had on many people will live on in the hearts and minds of future generations.
