Earl McKee was one of eight children born to Charles and Lelia McKee. He attended Covert Schools where he participated in all sports. He played basketball and speedball. He made All-Al-Van in Basketball. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Physical Education and minors in history and health science. He received a Master of Arts degree in Physical Education from Michigan State University in 1970.

From 1958-71 he taught in the Pontiac, Michigan Area School in Elementary, Jr. High and High Schools as Physical Education Teacher. He served as Jr. Varsity Coach at Pontiac Central from 1968-71. In 1971 Earl was selected to be the varsity basketball coach at Benton Harbor High School. While at Benton Harbor High he served as basketball coach from 1971-1988. His record in basketball was 251-124. He also served as golf coach (1979-1988), assistant track coach (1971-1979), girl's softball coach in 1985. He served as assistant Athletic Director and assistant men's basketball coach from 1990-1998. He finished his coaching career by serving as boy's varsity basketball coach at Eau Claire High School from 1998-2000.

He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Covert High School in 1974, the MHSC Coach of the Year in 1979, and Lake Michigan Athlete Conference Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1984. He was president of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) 1986-88. He was president of Michigan High School Coaches Association (MHSCA) 1984-86. In 1992 he was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame and in 1995 to the BHHS Wall of Fame. He has been Director of the Benton Harbor Golf Association summer golf league (1985-2001).

Earl and his wife Eula have two grown children, Kimberly and Kerra, who reside in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
