Following graduation from high school, George attended Michigan State University and Lake Michigan College, after which he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a combat medic in Vietnam, during which time he was severely wounded, and received the Purple Heart. After military discharge, George attended Northern Michigan University, graduating with a BS degree in biology, and minor in chemistry.

In northern Michigan, George began work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and then was hired by the USDA Soil Conservation Service. He attained the position of District Conservationalist in East Tawas, and then Kalamazoo County.

George assisted minorities, mainly African American and Hispanic, and small farmers in USDA farm programs, and was involved with Indian Education Program Title 9. He received numerous awards and honors during his thirty one and a half years of dedicated service and leadership to the cause of conservation and equal opportunity for the people of Michigan.

George is the first child and son of the late George and Ester Heffner, and has four sisters. He and his wife, Cindi, live in Portage, Michigan, where they are members of Threads Church. He is a member of the Oshtemo Rotary Club, thru which he and his wife have hosted German professional exchange members. Hobbies and interest include hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, and cooking.
