HOWARD LINDSEY
Class of 1964
Following graduation from high school Howard entered Western Michigan University, receiving a BA degree in History in 1968, followed by a Master of Arts in History at the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan he was elected by the History Department to serve as recruiter for minority students.
Howard's teaching career began in the Department of Social Science at Highland Park Community College, Highb Park, Michigan, where he taught for fifteen years, was elected head of the Faculty Senate, and served three years as chairman of the Department. In 1974, he was named "Teacher of the Year". He also taught briefly at the University of Detroit, and was presented with a service award from the Center of Black Studies in 1980. Following a leave of absence from teaching to earn his PILD in African American History, at the University of Michigan, he accepted a position at DePaul University, in the Department of History. In the Fall of 1996 he was named, Director for the Center for African American Resource.
Dr. Lindsey's major interest both academically and professionally, has been in the field of African American studies. He was one of the founding members of the National Council for Black Studies, in 1973. He has authored a book entitled, The History of Black America ( Press, February 1994), and has written many papers. He has lectured extensively, and has traveled to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Shana, and West Africa.
Howard is the son of Eva Lindsey, and the late Howard Lindsey.
