IRIS WOODBERRY SALTERS

CLASS OF 1962

Iris Woodberry, the only child of two loving supportive parents, grew up in Covert. She was blessed with an extended family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. A key component of the family life was involvement in the church as well as the school. Iris was active in both. Her most cherished moment in life was when she was named Valedictorian of the class of 1962.

After high school, Iris attended Western Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1966, and two "Masters" Degree in Education in 1972 and 1984 respectively. Iris has worked for several school systems in the Kalamazoo area spending the bulk of that time as a teacher in the Special Education Department. Presently she is President of the Kalamazoo Education Association, representing 900 plus teachers, social workers, psychologists, etc., who work for the Kalamazoo Public Schools. She also serves as a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Michigan Education Association which represents some 124,000 teachers in the State of Michigan.

She is married to Norman Salters and has two adult children, Michele and Dalas. Iris believes we must try to set an example for others to follow. That example must include good citizenship and strong character in our dealings with each other.
