Following graduation from Covert, Richard attended Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan, and Kalamazoo Valley College. Richard has worked for the Dogwatch Emergency Ambulance and Watervliet Fire and Ambulance Department. He was instrumental in the development and formation of the Watervliet Emergency Medical Technician Pulmonary Resuscitation Instructor. Richard has assisted in emergency programs for both Berrien and Van Buren Counties.

He developed and implemented a highly successful program as fire prevention officer for the Watervliet area schools that has saved at least two children from serious or fatal burns. Richard has been instrumental in improving the schools Fire Prevention Programs. He has encouraged several young people into this career field.

Other community services projects Richard has participated in are: a Drinking and Driving Awareness Program for Teens, a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, and volunteer coach for football and volleyball teams. Richard served as a trustee on the Watervliet Township Board. During that time, he was a member of the Watervliet City and Watervliet Township Fairview Cemetery Boards.

He and his wife Pam, live in the Watervliet area, and are raising three children. Richard is characterized as a hard working person who has demonstrated perseverance, dedication, devotion, and patience. He is also an exemplary community service worker. Richard has shown a keen interest in young people, as well as serving the elderly.
