After graduation Bernard attended Olivet College 1960-64, Wayne State 1965, Western Michigan University (continuing his. education 1965-1989), Master Degree from Michigan State University in 1989.

Bernard was employed by Grand Rapids Public Schools from 1964-67. In 1967 he came back home to Covert as teacher, basketball and track coach. Bernard then moved to Cassopolis Michigan in 1989 where he taught and then became principle of Cassopolis Public Schools until he retired in 2000. In 2001 he spent a short time at Lake Michigan College and presently a play ground sales person for Jack Golden Associates Inc.

Bernard had and active career along with teaching and coaching he was, CEA President, ATOM President, MITCA President, Member of Van Buren County Education Association, MEABD of Directors, Member of Michigan Park & Recreation Association. Awarded for Track Coach of the year and awards for working State and Cross Country meets and being an Registered Official with MHSAA for 40 years and an Association of Track Official of Michigan. He worked with children of all ages.

Bernard is a choir member of Grand Rapids First Assemble where he is preparing for a part in the Children's Ministry and on the Board of Directors of the Lords House Church of Cassopolis. A husband, father, educator, community leader, friend and an outstanding person, Bernard Abrams.
